Island Cottage

This new, rustic, 1920's style cottage on a remote Michigan island operates completely off the grid. It took a lot of surveying of the small 5 acre island to find the perfect location. But in the end, only three trees had to be removed to make room for the modest cottage.

    

Sustainable Elements:

 

  

Wood burning fireplace hand-built with local  stones

 

  

Locally harvested knotty pine siding, columns, and paneling, no drywall was used

 

  

  

One half ton of deep cell batteries fed by small lakeside solar panels and, occasionally, the propane powered back-up generator.

 

  

  

Tankless "supply on demand" hot water heater, 40% more efficient than normal systems

 

Propane stove and refrigerator

 

Handmade, locally produced cabinetry

 

Built on 17 piers with a metal roof
